Lab Tests

Organic acids testing

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) offers a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health with over 70 markers. It provides an accurate evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria. Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behaviour disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors.

The Organic Acids Test also includes markers for vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and is the only OAT to include markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses.

If abnormalities are detected using the OAT, treatments can include supplements, such as vitamins and antioxidants, or dietary modification. Upon treatment, patients and practitioners have reported significant improvement such as decreased fatigue, regular bowel function, increased energy and alertness, increased concentration, improved verbal skills, less hyperactivity, and decreased abdominal pain. The OAT is strongly recommended as the initial screening test.

Neuro-Biogenic Amines

Neuro-Biogenic Amines, Comprehensive; Urine

Urinary neuro-biogenic amines provide an overall assessment of a patient’s ability to synthesize and metabolize neurotransmitters, both in the periphery and, for some enzymes, behind the blood brain barrier as well. Alterations in urinary neurotransmitter status may be associated with a variety of conditions including metabolic disorders, mood/behavioural disorders, and in rare occasions the presence of certain tumours. Associations between urinary neurotransmitter levels and health conditions have been documented in scientific literature and may provide valuable insights as part of a comprehensive health assessment.

THIS TEST IS USEFUL FOR

  • Functional testing for COMT and MAOA
  • Identifying neurological imbalances
  • Measuring response to therapy
  • Risk assessment

Urinary Porphyrins

Porphyrins are generated as the body builds haemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in blood cells. Porphyrin (from the Greek word for purple) is made up of four ring compounds joined together, a structure conducive to holding a metal ion in its centre, iron in the heme porphyrin of haemoglobin and magnesium in chlorophyll. Small amounts of several porphyrins appear in urine normally.

The relative amounts of each porphyrin are altered by certain hereditary diseases and by environmental or nutritional influences. The classic cases of hereditary porphyria displayed highly coloured urine and skin eruptions and neurological symptoms of mania and “madness.”

Gene panels

Genetic Screening gives you more information as it screens for thousands of genes which include the MTHFR genes. It is not absolutely essential to get this test done for us to help you, but it may provide insight into why certain treatments are not working for you. You also need to be aware that these results may be checked by insurance companies and in the future, you may be denied insurance on the basis of these results.

Any nutrigenomic report is intended for informational purposes only and does not diagnose disease or illness. Remember that there are multiple factors and variables involved in chronic disease.

Dutch Hormone Tests

The DUTCH test offers a good option for reproductive hormones and includes metabolites.

IT IS A DRIED URINE TEST THAT PROVIDES INFORMATION ON:

  • How much hormones you are producing
  • How well you are clearing them, or clearing them too quickly
  • If they are being directed down alternate pathways
  • Maps Hormones Through a Full Menstrual Cycle
  • Provides a Comprehensive View of Key Hormone Fluctuations Throughout an Entire Cycle
  • More Accurate than Saliva for Progesterone and Especially for Estradiol

Environmental toxins

Every day, we are exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals through products like pharmaceuticals, pesticides, packaged foods, household products and environmental pollution. But also metals such as arsenic, mercury, lead and cadmium from old amalgam fillings or through contamination of our food and water supply.

These may accumulate over time in the tissues of those who have poor detoxification mechanisms or who have lots of genetic SNPs on genes involved with the clearance of these substances and toxins.

The GPL-Tox test screens for toxic non-metal chemical exposure which includes many environmental pollutants such as phthalates, vinyl chloride, benzene, pyrethrins, xylenes, styrene, organophosphates, MTBE and ETBE, diphenyl phosphate, acrylamide, 2, 4-Dicholorophenoxyacetic, perchlorate and many others.

Mold-Biotoxin screen

Visual Contrast sensitivity test

Surviving Mold provides an online VCS test that is not as good as using the handheld VCS tool, but sometimes this is all we’ve got. Understand that this is a screening test and not used to diagnose any condition. However, it does provide a cheap screening option that may validate further testing into possible mould and biotoxin exposure.

Cunningham panel

The purpose of the Cunningham Panel™ is to provide laboratory results that assist physicians in diagnosing infection-induced autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders. The panel measures the level of circulating antibodies directed against antigens concentrated in the brain and measures the ability of these and other autoantibodies to increase the activity of an enzyme (CaMKII) that upregulates neurotransmitters in the brain.

The panel consists of five tests. Four of these tests provide results that are expressed as a titer, or final dilution, at which an endpoint reaction was observed on an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) format. These tests measure circulating levels of autoantibodies directed against specific neuronal antigens, including Dopamine D1 receptor (DRD1), Dopamine D2L receptor (DRD2L), Lysoganglioside GM1, and Tubulin. Autoimmune antibodies that bind to these targets may interfere or potentially lead to a blocking or stimulation of the function of these antigen. This, in turn, may trigger movement and neuropsychiatric disorders, along with OCD and abnormal neurologic behaviour.

The 5th test, CaM Kinase II (CaMKII, Calcium-dependent Calmodulin Protein Kinase II) activation, produces a laboratory value (expressed as a numeric score) that reflects the percent above or below baseline CaMKII activity in a human neuronal cell line. CaMKII is a key enzyme that is involved in the upregulation of many neurotransmitters such as dopamine. CaMKII is also understood to increase the “plasticity” or sensitivity and responsiveness of neurologic receptors to neurotransmitters.

Comprehensive Stool analysis & parasitology x3

Gastrointestinal complaints are among the most common in medical care. This comprehensive profile helps pinpoint the causes of gastrointestinal symptoms and chronic systemic conditions, and measures key markers of digestion, absorption and inflammation.

Using growth-based culture, the standard of practice in clinical microbiology, as well as sensitive biochemical assays and microscopy, this thorough stool test evaluates the status of beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, yeast and parasites. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing to prescriptive and natural agents is also performed for appropriate bacterial and fungal species at no additional charge. Parasitology stool testing can include one-, two- or three-day collection, based on practitioner preference.

Mycotox profile

The GPL-MycoTOX panel screens for seven different mycotoxins, from four species of mold, in one urine sample, and is one of the most comprehensive and competitively priced mycotoxin tests available. It uses the power of advanced mass spectrometry (MS/MS), which is necessary to detect lower levels of these fungal toxins. This test is optimal for follow up testing to ensure that detoxification therapies have been successful.

GPL-MycoTOX pairs perfectly with the Organic Acids Test (OAT), GPL-TOX (Toxic Non-Metal Chemical Profile), Phospholipase A2 Activity Test, and the Glyphosate Test. This gives you comprehensive testing to assess exposure to common environmental toxins and the damage that can be caused by this exposure, all at a great value, and all from one urine sample.
